We have decided that we want to start making our way to South Dakota! We headed to Flagstaff and stayed at a KOA for a night and then landed at Portal RV park in Moab, Utah for a week. The drive over the weekend was long but so beautiful! I always enjoy travel days, and one of my favorite drives still is from Arizona to Utah. Glad we got to do it again this year.
Flagstaff was beautiful. We wish we could have stayed longer but with our aggressive plans to make it to SD in two weekends we were only able to stay one night. We don’t have much winter attire so we decided to spend our time in Flagstaff shopping for some warmer clothes and necessities that we will need in the cold/snow. We had dinner at Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steak-burgers. I love frozen custard and their skinny fries & burgers are yummy too!

The drive from Flagstaff to Moab, Utah was beautiful. We did a similar drive last year as well, but not the same. The entire drive goes through amazing sceneries of nature….red rocks are surrounding you, the feeling is so peaceful. It’s the best when no one is in front of you and your view out the windshield could be a postcard. We got pretty lucky this drive with no traffic and almost never anyone in front of us. 🙂 We arrived hungry, and found a smoked bbq restaurant, Spitfire BBQ & Taps. The ribs there were fall off the bone good and the sides were delicious! Definitely would go back there again! Mello Yello? or Fanta Orange?

We were in Moab for the week, at Portal RV Resort, before hitting the road and make our way to South Dakota on the weekend. Work per usual this week, but we are surrounded by the beautiful red rocks! The days are cold are short, and by the time we sign off from work the sun is usually down. When the sun is out, then a morning or lunch walk all bundled up is nice, but once the sun hides behind the clouds or the winds pick up you do not want to be outside in this cold! The coldest morning we’ve had was 16 degrees! The high that we’ve had is around 37-42 degrees. Growing up in California definitely did not prepare us for this weather! I’m surprised we’re doing alright.

There was just one day that we were able to get away and go grab some lunch. We went to Moab Food Truck Park thinking we’d have a good selection to choose from. Due to the cold weather, many stores & restaurants are not open. Luckily there was one little food truck that was open. Moab Street Dogs They were playing some french jazzy tunes and enjoying the beautiful sunny day. The french couple who owned the food truck was such a delight to be around. They had some yummy dogs to choose from. Mike had the New Yorker and I had the Chili Mac n Cheese! It was the only place we went to besides the day we arrived. The days flew by this week.

We’re definitely learning some things about being in the cold weather living in an RV. Mike had to go pick up an electric hose for us. That keeps our hose from freezing over, however the water spigot freezes every night. To counter that, Mike has filled up our fresh tank so that we can just use our pump in the morning. Our back/garage water pipes froze over the first night we think. Our rig is winterized to keep the pipes up front warm so that they don’t freeze over and possibly leak, but we have to keep an eye on the back pipes. Thankfully, we’re learning and making it work for us. Hoping we’ll do alright in the next couple destinations.
We got our snow chains, propane is filled, all packed up and are ready to hit the road early tomorrow morning! First drive will be to Rawlings, WY before arriving at Rapid City, South Dakota on Sunday!
